Memory Project

Working in partnership with The Memory Project Productions, Inc., the Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS), and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, the Galway Public Library will host “Messages From Survivors: One Family’s Holocaust Legacy,” a powerful new traveling exhibit about the Holocaust, survival, resiliency, and the importance of family and remembering during the month of May.

Programs

May 4:

10am – 11amFamily Stories: Preserving History Workshop

  • For all ages (under 8 with an adult). 
  • Pickup interview worksheets at the library in advance of the program and use them to gather information and pictures about members of your family. 
  • Bring your collected information to the workshop and we will help you create a scrapbook with poetry, pictures, drawings, and/or stories to help you preserve and remember your family history and special loved ones.

11am – 2pmOpening Reception for Messages From Survivors: One Family’s Holocaust Legacy

  • There will be light traditional Jewish foods & refreshments.
  • Display of Messages from Survivors – on display in large program room.
  • An online display called “WWII Impact on Arts & Culture”, showing some of the architecture, art and dance that was lost when the Nazis invaded Eastern Europe – continuously playing in small conference room.
  • “Dark & Light”, photos by Galway Public Library Photography club – on display in lobby.

12pm – 1pmDance: A Morale Booster

  • In conjunction with the Opening Reception, this presentation by Jake Goldsmith is about European folk dance & how WWII impacted cultural traditions. 
  • This will include a video of European folk dancing & a few lessons on how to do some of these traditional dances.

May 8:

7pm – 8pmYoung Professionals Book Discussion

  • This month’s book selection is Code Name Sapphire by Pam Jenoff.
  • This group is for ages 16 – 35. 
  • Discussions are always lively.

May 16:

6pm – 7pmThe Two-Fold Invasion: Never to Be the Same

  • Local citizen, Geza Ginzery, will give a special talk and answer questions about some of his and his family’s experiences in Hungary prior to, during and after WWII. 
  • Come hear his amazing, poignant stories and see some emotional photos.

Displays Throughout May:

  • Photos by Galway Public Library Photography Club titled “Dark & Light” – displayed in Lobby.
  • History of Major Battles of WWII & Timeline of Key Events leading up to and during WWII – displayed in main library room.
  • Makerspace for May: Kindness Quote Tree, write down a kind word or quote and hang it on our tree – displayed in the lobby.
  • Online presentation, WWII Impact on Arts & Culture – available for review at front desk.
  • Related Scavenger hunt, pick up at front desk and get a prize.
  • Galway Central School will be displaying a smaller version of our Messages From Survivors.
  • Featured Books – on display across from front desk and online through Hoopla.
